Artist Statement:
I find magic in the weathered pieces of driftwood that wash up on the shore. Each piece, shaped by the relentless dance of water and wind, tells a story of its own. It’s in these fragments, with their gnarled roots, sun-bleached planks, and smooth branches, that I see the beginnings of dragons. Dragons, in all their different forms across cultures, represent strength, wisdom, and a deep connection to nature. By turning driftwood into these magnificent creatures, I want to show how the real world and our imagination can meet. I let the wood guide me in creating these dragons. I look for the curves that suggest a sinuous neck, the jagged edges that show scales, and the hollows that might be a watchful eye. There’s a conversation between the wood and me as I reveal the dragon that’s hidden inside. I don’t want to change the wood too much; I just add what’s needed to bring the dragon to life. These driftwood dragons are more than sculptures. They represent power and the allure of myths, whispers of the water carrying the spirit of storms and journeys. Each dragon has a story written in its grain, shaped by the elements. They invite us to find nature, stories, and magic in unexpected places. They’re guardians of the shore, born from water, wood, and magic.
